Einhander’s Iron Lung

So, the world of Bluebird is (spoilers!) actually Earth, and moreover, actually the same Earth as the one where Captain Zarkov and Arrow from Captain’s Log were born. It’s all part of the same story that takes about two thousand years to play out. This scene takes place fifteen years before the events of Captain’s Log, five years after the Cloudkill Crisis that wiped out much of the human race and left the world a poisoned, irradiated ruin.

Einhander is an engineer living in a small outpost in the mountains. He lives underground, in a giant custom-fitted tank full of water, breathing canned air. The air outside is toxic enough that his weakened immune system can’t survive exposure to it for more than about ten minutes. But… occasionally scavengers roll up on the lawn with their homemade flamethrowers. For those occasions, Einhander built this mobile tank, a bubble of bulletproof glass with legs and an assortment of improvised weaponry.
